Recovery phrases & private keys

The master key to a self-custody wallet — and how to protect it.

Lesson

When you create a self-custody wallet (like Phantom or MetaMask), the app shows you a list of 12 or 24 ordinary words. This is your recovery phrase — MetaMask calls it a Secret Recovery Phrase.

What it does

The phrase can rebuild your whole wallet on any device. Behind the scenes it generates your private keys — the secret codes that approve transactions. Whoever has the phrase has the wallet.

Why it matters so much

If you lose your phone, the phrase gets you back in. If someone else sees it, they can quietly move everything out, and there is no bank to call.

How to store it

  • Write it on paper (or another offline, physical backup) in the exact order shown.
  • Keep it somewhere private and safe from fire and water.
  • Don't photograph it, screenshot it, email it, or save it in notes or cloud storage.
  • Never type it into a website, a form, or a chat.

When is it OK to enter it?

Only when you are restoring your own wallet, inside the official app you downloaded yourself, on your own device. Pop-ups, "validators," "sync tools" and support chats are never the place.

A password unlocks the app on one device. The recovery phrase IS the wallet. They are not the same thing.

Key points

  • The recovery phrase can rebuild your wallet anywhere.
  • Whoever has it controls the funds.
  • Store it offline, on paper, in a safe place.
  • Only enter it to restore your own wallet in the official app.
